International Conference on Physics of Light-Matter Coupling in Nanostructures and Nanophotonics

Xiamen - China

8th-13th April 2025

The International Conference on Physics of Light-Matter Coupling in Nanostructures and Nanophotonics (PLMCN) will be held in Xiamen University in Xiamen - China on 8th-13th April 2025.

The PLMCN will be devoted to the fundamental and technological issues relevant to the realization of a new generation of opto-electronic devices based on advanced low-dimensional and photonic structures, such as low threshold polariton lasers, new optical switches, single photon emitters, photonic band-gap structures, etc. It should review recent achievements in the fundamental understanding of strong light-matter coupling, as well as follow progress in the development of epitaxial and processing technologies of wide gap semiconductor and organic nanostructures and microcavities providing the basis for advanced optical studies.

The conference will be open to new emerging field as carbon nanotubes and quantum information.

Xiamen City

Xiamen, historically known as Amoy, is a sub-provincial city in southeastern Fujian, China, near the Taiwan Strait. The city is divided into six districts, covering 1,700.61 square kilometers, with a population of over 5.3 million as of 2022. Its urban area has expanded to include parts of Zhangzhou, forming a metropolitan area with nearly 10 million people.

Xiamen is one of China's original special economic zones, opened to foreign trade in the 1980s, and it hosts a major international seaport ranked as the 7th-largest container port in China.

The city is a hub for scientific research and education, with top institutions like Xiamen University, Huaqiao University, and Xiamen University of Technology located there. Xiamen also has a rich history of migration to Southeast Asia, with strong support from overseas Chinese in developing its educational and cultural institutions.

Climate

Xiamen has a monsoonal humid subtropical climate (Köppen Cfa), with long, hot, and humid summers, and short, mild, dry winters. The warmest month is July, with an average temperature of 28.3 °C (82.9 °F), while January is the coolest at 13.1 °C (55.6 °F). The annual mean temperature is 21.1 °C (70.0 °F). The city experiences extremes from 0.1 °C (32 °F) to 39.2 °C (103 °F). Spring is the most humid season, but typhoons in late summer and early autumn contribute to significant rainfall, with an annual total of 1,301 mm (51 in). Xiamen enjoys around 1,893 hours of sunshine yearly, with frost being rare and no snowfall since 1893.

Social Program

Excursion

The social program will include an excursion to Gulangyu, a pedestrian island off the coast of Xiamen designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Xiamen, a beautiful “garden on the sea,” was once the habitat of egrets in ancient times, hence it is also called the "Egret Island." Covering an area of approximately 1,700 square kilometers, ever since it was selected in 1980 as one of the first Special Economic Zones, the city of Xiamen has become a center for technology, commerce, trade, finance, and transportation. At the same time, Xiamen attracts visitors from all over the country with its stunning island scenery and rich historical and cultural heritage.
Xiamen is one of the most popular tourist cities people choose for travel. Attractions such as "Baicheng Beach," "Gulangyu," and "Zhongshan Road" have captivated countless travelers, leaving them reluctant to leave.

Gulangyu was originally named “Yuanshazhou” and also known as “Yuanzhouzi” and “Kulangsu.” During the Southern Song Dynasty, it was called “Wulongyu,” and in the Ming Dynasty, it was renamed “Gulangyu.” Its name comes from a reef southwest of the island: whenever the tide rises and waves crash against the reef, the sound resembles that of beating drums. People called it “Gulang Shi” (Drum-wave Rock), and thus the island came to be known as Gulangyu.
Gulangyu combines history, culture, and natural scenery, preserving over a thousand buildings of various architectural styles and maintaining a tradition of musical culture. It is home to China’s first and world-class piano museum and the only and largest organ museum in China and the world, earning the island the reputation of “Island of the Piano” and “Hometown of Music.” Gulangyu has been honored as a national 5A-level tourist attraction and a nationally key cultural relic protection unit, among others. On July 8, 2017, “Kulangsu, a Historic International Settlement” was inscribed on the World Heritage List.

Zhongshan Road Pedestrian Street is one of Xiamen’s oldest commercial streets, bustling with large crowds, a wide variety of goods, and lively popularity—comparable to Manhattan in New York, Ginza in Tokyo, or Central in Hong Kong. Zhongshan Road represents the prosperity of old Xiamen, rich with the rhythm of its era. Here, visitors can enjoy a rich material world and experience the charm of the old city of Xiamen.
Today, Zhongshan Road remains one of the best-preserved historical urban areas in Xiamen, showcasing modern historical features. It is home to many cultural relics such as the Narrow Lane, the former residence of Chen Huacheng, and the “First Sacred Hall of China.” The unique style of the area is characterized by Nanyang (South Seas) arcade buildings, a dazzling LED nightscape, a variety of Fujian-Taiwanese snacks, and the ancient Nanyin music echoing through its alleys and neighborhoods. Currently, Zhongshan Road has 3 provincial-level cultural heritage sites, 5 municipal-level cultural heritage sites, 1 municipal-level Taiwanese-related cultural relic, more than 10 historical sites and relics, as well as intangible cultural heritage like Nanyin. In June 2012, Xiamen’s Zhongshan Road was honored with the title of “China’s Historic and Cultural Famous Street.”

Nanputuo Temple is located at the foot of Wulao Peak in the southeast of Xiamen, Fujian Province, adjacent to Xiamen University and facing the clear blue harbor. The temple covers an area of 258,000 square meters, with a building area of 21,270 square meters. Originally built at the end of the Tang Dynasty and known as Sizhou Temple, it was renamed Puzhao Temple during the reign of Emperor Zhiping in the Song Dynasty. In the early Ming Dynasty, the temple fell into neglect and was not rebuilt until the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty. Because it enshrines the Guanyin Bodhisattva—similar to the Guanyin shrine on Mount Putuo in Zhejiang—and is located south of Mount Putuo, it was named “Nanputuo Temple,” making it one of the important Buddhist sites in Southern Fujian.
Nanputuo Temple is a nationally key Han Chinese Buddhist temple, one of the sixth batch of provincial-level cultural relic protection units in Fujian Province, and one of Xiamen's eight major scenic areas.
